Divergent,Insurgent & Allegiant
I know that I’m late on this series. It had been out for a
period of time and I just don’t know why I haven’t picked it up then. This has
taken me ages to finish as I decided that I should start taking up courses to
upgrade my certification. Is chaos and mess and exhausting when you have to
work and study at the same time. I will save this for another post on how to
find a balance and I will do this when I really do.
When the novel was out there were so many reviews and hype
about this. Then the movies come around it was a blast. Even the bookstore came
out this beautiful big jade accessories with all the symbols that represent
different factions. I didn’t know then but I know now. Because of the price
back then I did not get the books right on the spot. Oh, well, eventually I
still got it just a bit far behind the trend.
But whatever, I create this blog just to make myself
motivated to read more and as a milestone reminder for my own happiness.
First off, Divergent,
For what I remembered this first book is more like an
introductory into the world the author had created. Imaginary was needed when
I read through this book. The author herself uses the specific words in
depicting the details of the world and environment in this book.
When she says the main character jumps on the train and
gushing of the winds on her face, I think I could hear the sound of the train
and cold wind hitting my face. That’s what I feel when I’m reading this book.
As the story goes on, everything in the author’s world comes
to live and the structures of the society is being well explained without
confusion. I must say when you are writing a book about a fantasy world and
imaginary stuff, your vocabulary had to be strong and the ability to put things
into words accurately has to be above the normal human level. I know this is
definitely not me.
This book mostly talks about Beatrice on her journey to
become an adult by choosing which faction she belongs to. As she experiences
things and made her decision, she realizes that things weren’t as simple as
what is seen.
Second, Insurgent
This book talks about the two main characters of this story,
Beatrice and Tobias. Most of their interaction and what Beatrice went through
when she chooses to be Dauntless. From the test she went through on the adult
ceremony she already knows that she is divergent. She kept her secret and
chooses to join the Dauntless.
Also in this book, all the romance between the two
characters started. As the plot went on, things started going wrong. Her altered
results had raised suspicion in erudite faction and also because she is a
transfer from other faction she is being bullied. All that story about you has
to compete if you want to stay..duh.
When Tris discover the plan from the erudite, they both
decided to run away from their faction. At the same time, her mother had told
her the truth about herself to Tris. That’s when the things started to heat up.
Eventually, they have to leave their faction and run away to
other faction. That’s when readers have a chance of knowing all the details and
traits about all different factions. One thing I want to say about this book is
the plot twist. I’m not going to say anything about that but needless to say, the plot twist makes it more interesting and excited to read more.
Here are some pictures and some short description of various different faction.
“And sometimes, if you
want the truth, you have to demand it.” –pg 41
“Both of us watch the
purification happen, and I wonder if he is thinking what I am: that it would be
nice if life worked this way, stripping the dirt from our lives and sending us
out into the world clean. But some dirt is destined to linger” – pg 43
“Sometimes I feel like
I am collecting the lessons each faction has to teach me and storing them in
my mind like a guidebook for moving through the world. There is always
something to learn, always something that is important to understand.” – pg 269
“Insurgent”, he says.
“Noun. A person who acts in opposition to the established authority, who is not
necessarily regarded as a belligerent”. –pg 458
The third which the last
sequel for this series, Allegiant
Kudos to the author for writing this novel as the
construction of the story is impressive. This could have taken a long time to
have the concept and theory to build and come together as one complete plot.
This book is like a world outside a world if you know I
mean. I’m not going to spoil the storyline nor plot here as it is not fun to
tell everything in the book. Other than the construction of the story, the plot
of this story is also something to be amazed about.
Mostly this book talks about how Tris and Tobias survived the
disaster from the erudite and went on to discover the whole truth about their
world. Then again, something happened to the place that they think it is their
shelter. A whole new concept of the world and society is being introduced here.
I must say the writing is perfect. The flow of the story and
the sequence of the event happened without being forced. From what I think, the
author has the duty to lead the readers through the storyline instead of
leaving the readers blur.
One thing to notice about is that starting from book 2, the
author had uses the two main characters perspective in telling the story. This
way the readers could get 2 sides of the story which makes the readers get to
experience what the characters are feeling and why they do things a certain way.
Switching of perspective between the two main characters
could be a challenging task as the author themselves have to know when and
where to switch the perspective so all things make sense.
“Desperation can make
a person does surprising things.” – pg 174
“Caleb told me that
our mother said there was evil in everyone, and the first step to loving
someone else is to recognize that evil in ourselves, so we can forgive them.” –
pg 370
“To me, when someone
wrongs you, you both share the burden of that wrongdoing. The part of its weigh
on both of you. Forgiveness, then, means choosing to bear the full weight all
by myself.” – pg 140
“There are so many
ways to be brave in this world. Sometimes bravery involves laying down your
life for something bigger than yourself, or for someone else. Sometimes it
involves giving up everything you have ever known, or everyone you have ever
loved, for the sake of something greater.
But sometimes it
doesn’t. Sometimes it is
nothing more than gritting your teeth through your pain, and the work of every
day, the slow walk toward a better life.” –pg 509
“Since I was young, I
have always known this: Life damages us, everyone. We can’t escape that damage. But now, I am also
learning this: We can be mended. We mend each other. “– pg 526
A little disclaimer here is that all the image used are from
google search and I do not own them, all credit to the respective owner.
All and all that I can say is that this series of the novel
is very much success to me. As the way of writing did not bore me out and wanting
to read on more as the story progress. As a non-native English speaker that I am,
this series is very much easy to understand.
With all that said, I’m going end this blog post here. Have a
good day, much love to you all.
